Description

Enjoy a delicious twist on a classic with these Italian Garlic Bread Sloppy Joes. Featuring savory ground beef or turkey, rich tomato sauce, and melted cheese, all served in crispy Italian bread rolls, this dish is perfect for casual dinners or gatherings with friends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 large Italian bread rolls or hoagie buns
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  3. Add the ground beef or turkey, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes, draining excess fat if using beef.
  4. Stir in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  5. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Slice the Italian bread rolls or hoagie buns in half lengthwise. Optionally, toast them in the oven for about 5 minutes for a crunchier texture.
  8. Place the bottom halves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Spoon a generous amount of the meat mixture onto each bottom half of the rolls.
  10. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the meat mixture.
  11. Add grated Parmesan cheese on top of the mozzarella.
  12. Place the top halves of the rolls over the cheese, brushing with olive oil if desired.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the tops are golden brown.
  14. Let cool for a couple of minutes before serving.
  15. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
  16. Serve warm with crispy fries or a fresh salad.

Notes

  • For added heat, mix in red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños into the meat mixture.
  • Feel free to customize the cheese or add other toppings like sautéed peppers or mushrooms.
