This Southern Banana Cobbler is a heartwarming twist on a classic dessert, transforming ripe bananas into a rich and comforting treat. It’s simple to make and utterly irresistible, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • a pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, gently combine sliced ripe bananas, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Stir gently and pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  4. Cut 1/2 cup of cold unsalted butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  5. Pour in 1/2 cup of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the flour and butter mixture. Stir gently until just combined.
  6. Spoon dollops of the cobbler topping over the banana filling in your baking dish, leaving some gaps for the filling to bubble up.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the banana filling is bubbly around the edges.
  8. Let the cobbler cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
