Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup softened butter
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- splash of vanilla extract
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- In a small bowl, warm 1 cup of milk until it’s lukewarm, then sprinkle the yeast over it. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and a pinch of salt.
- In another bowl, melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, then add in the foamy yeast mixture, 1 large egg, and 2 tablespoons of red food coloring. Stir well.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need to add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, mix 1/2 cup of softened butter, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 cup of cocoa powder in a bowl until well combined.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
- Evenly spread the filling mixture over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal.
- Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until they are golden brown.
- While the rolls bake, beat together 8 oz of cream cheese, 1/4 cup of softened butter, 2 cups of powdered sugar, and a splash of vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool slightly before generously spreading the cream cheese frosting on top. Enjoy!
