Description

Experience breakfast bliss with this Apple Cinnamon French Toast Skillet, a warm hug on a plate. It’s an easy-to-prepare dish that combines custardy French toast with tender apples and aromatic cinnamon.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 68 cups of sturdy, slightly stale bread (like challah, brioche, or thick-sliced artisan white bread)
  • 34 Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and diced into small, uniform pieces)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups of milk (whole or 2%, or dairy-free alternatives like almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter (for sautéing the apples and greasing the skillet)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
  • Real maple syrup (for drizzling, optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Chopped toasted pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. First things first, get those apples ready. Peel, core, and dice the apples into roughly 1/2-inch pieces.
  2. In your oven-safe skillet, melt 1-2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Sauté for about 8-10 minutes, or until the apples are tender but still hold their shape. Optionally, add a splash of apple cider or apple juice during this step.
  3. While the apples are cooking, slice your chosen bread into thick 1-inch cubes and spread them out on a baking sheet to air dry further if they're not already stale enough.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 1/2 cups of milk, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and another teaspoon of cinnamon until well combined.
  5. Add the bread cubes to the custard mixture and gently toss to coat all the bread pieces. Let them soak for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Lightly grease your oven-safe skillet. Spread about half of the soaked bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the skillet. Spoon half of the sautéed apple mixture over the bread. Repeat with the remaining bread cubes and apples. Pour any leftover custard from the bowl evenly over the top layer.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-35 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown on top and set in the center.
  8. Once baked, carefully remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Dust generously with powdered sugar and drizzle with warm maple syrup.
